BlackBerry said to have lost two high-level executives in recent weeks

McCann, Gingras claimed responsible for BB10 Hub, social apps

BlackBerry has lost two more high-level executives in the last few weeks, according to a report. T.A. McCann, vice president of social networking at the phone manufacturer, is said to have left the company two weeks ago, while senior director of handheld applications Marc Gingras apparently left in "recent weeks."

McCann is claimed by the Wall Street Journal to be responsible for BlackBerry Messenger, as well as its social networking apps, and came into the company through its acquisition of contact management service Gist in 2011. Gingras was also brought in as an acquisition-hire in 2011, through social-calendar company Tungle.me. He was tasked with reworking the calendar and contacts applications in BlackBerry 10, and is said by sources of the report to be a "driving force behind" the BlackBerry 10 Hub.

Though there are no listed reasons for leaving, the report states that Blackberry tried to retain the two executives, suggesting it was a voluntary departure, rather than a firing.

After underwhelming sales and a poor quarter after the BlackBerry 10 device launch, BlackBerry is having to take serious action. After letting go of 5,000 staff in the last fiscal year alone, the company is planning to lay off even more employees, and has already fired Richard Piasentin, the vice president for sales in the United States. At the same time, it needs to improve on the 6.8 million total handsets shipped, of which 2.7 million are BB10 devices, as well as to turn around its operating loss of $84 million from $3.1 billion in revenues in the last quarter. The loss of two executives will likely not help the situation for it.
