Sources: Google attempting to forge deals to stream TV online

updated 06:03 pm EDT, Tue July 16, 2013

New redoubled effort has made little headway with broadcasters so far

According to sources familiar with the matter, search engine giant Google is in talks with media companies about licensing for an Internet TV service to stream live programming. If the reports are accurate, this newest attempt is the second in as many years to get a service off the ground for the Mountain View-based company.

A report at the Wall Street Journal claims that Google has reached out to conventional media programmers in the last few months. Google already has some arrangements in place for "traditional" cable across its Google Fiber network where available, but any Internet streaming would require a new agreement.

No deals are yet in place. Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt was sighted at last week's Sun Valley industry CEO conference, which was notably broadcast industry-heavy this year. Google has refused comment on the rumors.
