Samsung intros '840 Evo' entry-level SSDs

updated 09:00 pm EDT, Wed July 17, 2013

Capacities range from 120GB to 1TB

Samsung has introduced a new range of solid-state drives, the 840 Evo series, which will be available in several capacities ranging from 120GB to 1TB. The company suggests the new notebook-size offerings are aimed at the general consumer market, marketed under the slogan "SSDs for everyone." Despite the entry-level theme, the new drives are claimed to boost performance over current budget SSDs.

The 840 Evo drives are based on Samsung's 10-nanometer class NAND flash memory, which began production in April. Each capacity integrates 128GB modules paired with the company's multi-core MEX controller and a 6Gbps SATA connection. Rather than selling a separate enclosure for external use, a USB 3.0 adapter cable will be available as an optional accessory.

Samsung claims its 250GB 840 Evo drive achieves sequential write speeds of up to 520MBps, more than twice as fast as the previous-generation drive of the same capacity, while sequential write speeds for the 120GB model are said to have tripled. The flagship 1TB offering lists sequential read and write speeds of 540MBps and 520MBps, respectively, with random read and write performance exceeding 90,000 IOPS.

The 2.5-inch 840 Evo drives are expected to ship in August, however pricing has yet to be announced.
