New York Times reveals gesture-based app as Leap Motion ships

updated 12:26 pm EDT, Fri July 19, 2013

Newspaper app for motion controller initially free to users

The New York Times is releasing an app that will allow users of the Leap Motion Controller to read articles with gestures. Details of the app come at the same time as reports that the controller manufacturer is starting to ship the device to customers that pre-ordered, ahead of its expected delayed ship date of July 22nd.

The app for both OS X and Windows, free initially through the Leap Motion Airspace Store, will let readers navigate through available stories by moving their hand above the Leap Motion itself, writes TechCrunch. Cards showing individual stories will scroll horizontally, allowing the user to tap to view the full article, scrolling by making a circular motion with a finger, and shaking the hand to go back to the previous selection screen.

While it will be free to use at first, it is likely that developers for the publication will gain a login system and more content if it becomes popular.

Engadget reports that people who ordered the Leap Motion have been receiving shipping notices for the device, with customers likely to receive their order on or just after the launch date. Leap Motion is currently selling the controller for $80.
