June sales down 12 percent despite updated MacBook Air

US Mac sales fell approximately 5 percent year-over-year during Apple's most recent quarter, which ended in June, according to new NPD data. Single-month sales for June dipped 12 percent, in spite of the launch of an upgraded MacBook Air. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster comments that he expects Apple to announce a global 5 percent decline for Macs when it reveals its Q3 results tomorrow.

NPD figures also show US iPod sales sliding 32 percent during the quarter, which Munster extrapolates to an estimate of 23 percent globally. Both the Mac and the iPod are, however, increasingly marginal portions of Apple's business. The Mac represents just 15 percent of revenues, while the iPod is only 2 percent. The bulk of Apple's income has shifted to the iPhone and the iPad, both of which are believed to be eating into the iPod and Mac, respectively.

Author, how would NPD know these figures? Or are they just guessing?

It's a little more elaborate than "just guessing," but essentially yes. These companies have mystery shoppers and agents that gauge how well stores are selling compared to last year, and compile that data. Given that the only Mac product updated in the quarter was the MacBook Air, and that only happened in the last three weeks of the quarter, it's a reasonably safe guess that Mac sales are likely down from the previous quarter when those super-cool iMacs *finally* came out in quantity.
