Verizon adds 500Mbps download speed tier to FiOS Internet service

updated 02:46 pm EDT, Tue July 23, 2013

Adds 500Mbps download, 100Mbps upload speed tier with $310 monthly cost

Verizon is updating its FiOS broadband service with a new high-speed package for customers to buy. The new package will provide Internet users on the FiOS Quantum Internet Service a top download speed of 500 megabits per second, accompanied by an upload speed of 100 megabits per second, an increase from the previous top tier's 300Mbps download speed.

While the service will only be in a limited number of areas at first, the company hopes to deploy the new tier to the entire FiOS footprint in 2014, reports Engadget. The high-speed connection comes at a cost, with customers expected to pay $310 per month for it under a double play plan or $330 for triple play on a two-year agreement. Businesses will get the connection on its own at a higher $370 per month, also on a two-year commitment. It will also be available to customers and businesses on a no-contract, month-to-month basis, but the costs were not revealed.

The new top tier of connection from Verizon could be seen as an attempt by the company to fight off other similar fiber-based Internet connections. In comparison, the slowly-expanding Google Fiber offers a 1Gbps connection to its customers, at a cost of $70 per month for the connection alone or $120 with TV services, though it is currently only available in a very limited number of areas.
