Curved television gains THX Display certification, $15,000 price tag

LG has started selling its 55-inch curved OLED television in the United States, following a launch in South Korea a few months ago. The 55EA9800, appearing in some Best Buy stores, has also been declared by LG to be the first OLED TV in the world to have THX Display Certification, after passing more than 600 picture quality tests.

The display is curved in order to make sure the screen is equidistant from the viewer's eyes when viewed from straight ahead, with the aim if minimizing distortion at the edges of the screen. It also uses a four-color pixel system, employing an extra white sub-pixel to fine-tune colors displayed on the screen. The screen itself weighs in at 37.5 pounds, and measures just 0.17-inches thick.

Sales of the curved HDTV are starting in the Best Buy Magnolia home theater location in Richfield, Minnesota, with other Magnolia stores inside Best Buy in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, and San Antonio to receive stock in the coming weeks. Other Magnolia locations will also gain the television by the end of the summer.

Best Buy is selling the 55EA9800 for $15,000, the same price as the Korean launch.
