Analyst sees Google dropping Asus, getting LG for next Nexus 7

Google could partially unify Nexus offerings with LG

The 2013 Nexus 7 has just gone on sale, but there is already speculation on what form its successor might take. Prominent technology industry analyst Mingchi Kuo has published a report postulating that Google will switch away from Asus, which built the last two models of the 7-inch tablet. Instead, Kuo expects that the search giant will partner with Korean tech firm LG for the 2014 model, citing a number of reasons for the possible switch.

Kuo says that the LG partnership would allow Google to further its collaboration with LG on Nexus products. The two companies have already worked together on the Nexus 4 smartphone, but they have never collaborated on a tablet. Doing so would enable Google to bring another player into the Android tablet market, a market the company has been trying to greatly expand.

Additionally, a partnership with LG would allow Google to boost that company's standing in the touchscreen market. LG stands along with Samsung near the top of the worldwide touchscreen market, and boosting LG's standing would ensure that the other Korean giant doesn't come to hold too much sway over that essential mobile computing component.

Finally, the alliance with LG would allow Google to get further access to key tablet technologies. These include in-plane switching displays, which provide better image quality, and GF2 touch technology, which is superior to the OGS technology featured in the current Nexus 7. Kuo believes these features would help narrow the design gap with Apple's iPad and iPad mini.
