Amazon has tripled its personnel count over three years to 97,000

Online retail giant continues to grow in size

E-retail giant Amazon now employs 97,000 full- and part-time employees, more than three times the number it employed in 2010, according to GeekWire. The figure came out in Amazon's most recent quarterly filings. Observers note that the personnel count is a testament to the rapid growth of the Internet retailer, which also maintains a prominent position in electronics manufacturing with its Kindle and Kindle Fire line of devices.

At this point in 2010, Amazon reported 28,300 full- and part-time workers. The company does not include seasonal workers -- which it typically hires in the thousands -- in its staff count.

GeekWire notes that Amazon's total puts it slightly behind Microsoft, which has 99,000 employees, excluding contractors. At its present rate of growth, though, Amazon could very well surpass the Redmond software giant in staff size over the next few years.
