Samsung looks to boost AMOLED display power efficiency with Novaled tech

Samsung is positioning to acquire Novaled AG in a deal said to worth up to $200 million, reports Bloomberg. The German company specializes in the development of materials and technologies designed to optimize OLED displays and already counts Samsung as a 10 percent stakeholder and customer for over 50 percent of its sales. Many of Samsung's popular Galaxy range of smartphones center on AMOLED display technology with Samsung targeting the full takeover of the company for its energy conserving techniques.

"We are internally reviewing plans to acquire Novaled, but no details have been set yet," Lee Tae Hun, a spokesman for one of Samsung's chemicals and electronics materials unit told Bloomberg. Samsung, along with LG and Sony are considered the market leaders in OLED technology, with the South Korean giant one of the first to introduce OLED technology on smartphones. OLED displays are theoretically more efficient that LCD displays as they do not require backlighting, however, in practice, optimizing them for minimal power drain has proven a challenge.

OLED displays in smartphones are generally not yet considered to be superior to the older LCD technology, although the display in the Samsung Galaxy S4 is considered to be the best OLED display the company has yet produced. Although not yet fully mature as a display technology, it offers distinct benefits over LCD in terms of producing realistic blacks and much better contrast. Despite receiving praise for the display in the current Galaxy S4 for its color accuracy, some users have complained of ghosting and smearing issues in the display when scrolling not seen in previous displays from the company.
