Minnowboard first x86 enthusiast device to ship

Intel and CircuitCo Electronics have commenced shipping the pair's combined effort in the open-source mini-PC market. The Minnowboard, a 4.2-inch square caseless Atom-based board, is available now at limited outlets. Wider distribution is expected before the end of the year. The MinnowBoard mounts an Atom E640 system-on-a-chip, with integrated GMA 600 graphics, 1 GB of DDR2 RAM, and 4MB of flash memory for firmware.

The board has a microSD card slot, a SATA 2 port, two USB ports, one microUSB port, a serial port, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and HDMI output. Enthusiast features include eight buffered GPIO pins, two GPIO-driven LEDs, four GPIO switches, and a system firmware flash programming header. Angstrom Linux is the operating system optimized best for the micro-PC.

The board's schematics and design are available under a Creative Commons license. The unit retails for $199 and is available at retailers Digi-Key, Newark, Mouser Electronics, and Farnell.
