Microsoft could be working on augmented reality glasses for Xbox One

Microsoft has filed for a patent for a head-mounted display. Made public this week, but filed in January this year, the patent outlines very specifically how a gamer could user a head-mounted display to interact with other gamers online. The device closely resembles a device in a leaked Xbox 720 document that surfaced in 2012 that included references to augmented reality glasses that could become a peripheral for what is now known as the Xbox One.

Dubbed the "Fortleza" Kinect Glasses, drawings in the leaked document at the time showed users using augmented reality for gaming displaying other information relevant to the game. The patent in question describes how the glasses could be users to locate users, track gestures and get additional information about the gaming environment through the supplementary OLED displays built into the glasses. It would also incorporate other sensors including gyroscopes and accelerometers to determine player's movements in relation to the gaming content.

Clearly, the technology for such a device is most definitely feasible. Although the Xbox One has already been revealed, so far the only accessories to surface for the device include the revised Kinect 2 accessory, bundled with the console, along with the updated gaming controller. The Xbox 360 existed for several years before the Kinect accessory was introduced, helping to freshen the console and extend its shelf-life. With the release of the Xbox One several months away still, it remains possible that Microsoft may be keeping such an accessory up its sleeve, or equally, it may never see the light of day as a shipping product.
