Second 'Gear' filing narrows focus to smartwatches, confirms name
Samsung may be bringing its long-rumored smartwatch under its Galaxy branding, according to a new trademark filing. Following on from an earlier trademark registration filed in late June of this year for the "Samsung Gear," the company has opted to file another registration, but this time for "Samsung Galaxy Gear."
The new filing, spotted by Galaxy Club, significantly narrows down the range of the trademark compared to the non-Galaxy version. The earlier trademark covered a considerable number of goods and services, while the more recent version is focused just on "wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle" capable of sending and receiving data, smartphones, tablets, and portable computers. This narrow focus strongly suggests that the smartwatch will be called the Galaxy Gear.
Considering the new trademark filing and a recently uncovered smartwatch design patent application, it is possible that Samsung will reveal a smartwatch in the coming months, if not at IFA Berlin 2013 next month, alongside the expected Galaxy Note 3.
