Auction site to be first sales venue for Firefox OS smartphone in US

ZTE is putting its Firefox OS smartphone on sale in the United States and the United Kingdom, though not through retail stores for the moment. The ZTE Open will be available to purchase through eBay, with customers able to get the budget handset via "Buy it now" for $80 in the US and 60 ($93) in the UK.

Initially on sale in Spain, the ZTE Open has a 3.5-inch HVGA TFT display, a single-core processor with 256MB of RAM and 512MB of internal storage, 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a 1,200mAh battery. The version supplied through eBay will be an unlocked device, without local apps or features, and are "not optimized for specific networks," according to the Mozilla blog.

Firefox OS aims to provide an open operating system for smartphones and tablets, as well as lowering the bar for app development by allowing HTML5-based apps to be sold through the Firefox Marketplace. "We are pleased that now we will put the full power of the Web in even more people's hands," said Dr. Li Gong, senior vice president of mobile devices at Mozilla, continuing "With a great potential user base, we know that even more developers around the world will create their apps with new APIs to stimulate an inspiring new wave of innovation."
