First company with offline translation app

Facebook has announced that it has acquired Mobile Technologies, a Pittsburgh-based company that specializes in speech translation technology. The company boasts of producing the world's first offline speech-to-speech translation app, Jibbigo, along with the first simultaneous interpretation system for educational lectures.

"Facebook, with its mission to make the world more open and connected, provides the perfect platform to apply our technology at a truly global scale," Mobile Technologies writes in an announcement. "We look forward to continuing to develop our technology at Facebook and finding new and interesting ways to apply it to Facebook's long-term product roadmap."

Facebook has yet to fully detail its plans for Mobile Technologies, though the social network's director of product management, Tom Stocky, notes that the "amazing team" will be invited to work with the engineers in Menlo Park, California.

"Voice technology has become an increasingly important way for people to navigate mobile devices and the web, and this technology will help us evolve our products to match that evolution," Stocky adds.

Facebook has worked to improve its presence in the mobile space by improving its mobile apps and offering new services for third-party integration. The latest buyout follows a number of other acquisitions focusing on mobile technologies, bringing developers responsible for Pieceable Viewer, Pulp, Karma and Lightbox, among others.
