Thinner iPad, Retina iPad mini to arrive in 2013, source claims

Thinner bezel expected for large iPad

Apple is allegedly preparing to release a Retina-equipped iPad mini and a thinner 9.7-inch iPad later this year, unnamed sources have told Bloomberg. The claims mesh with other reports and analyst predictions surrounding the next-generation Mini, as the current model falls behind the pixel density of competing devices such as Google's new Nexus 7 tablet.

The next full-size iPad is said to retain its 9.7-inch display, but with a thinner bezel and a slimmer overall profile that is said to resemble the current Mini. The flagship tablet is considered due for a refresh, as the fourth-generation variant arrived nearly a year ago without any major changes to the exterior design.

A separate report earlier this month claimed Samsung is preparing to supply Retina-resolution displays for an iPad mini launch in the fourth quarter, though a conflicting rumor pointed to early 2014 as the likely timing.

Many analysts expect Apple to introduce a new iPhone before revamping the iPad lineup. Recent rumors point to September 10 as the company's next press event, with hardware rumors focusing on the iPhone '5S' and a midrange iPhone that has been referred to as the '5C.'
