NTT DoCoMo dumps slow-selling Galaxy S4 from winter range

In a surprise move, Japan's NTT DoCoMo has dropped Samsung's Galaxy S4 from its winter lineup after poor sales during the summer, reports Reuters. Instead, Sharp will be set to join Sony and Fujitsu on NTT, making for an all-Japanese winter lineup. NTT only sold 700,000 Galaxy S4 handsets, well short of the 1 million target that the Japanese telco had set for the South Korean maker's flagship.

By comparison, Sony's Xperia A (a Japan-only model) was NTT's biggest seller, almost doubling the Galaxy S4's sales, notching up 1.3 million units. In fact, the Sony smartphone is now NTT's fastest selling smartphone ever. That device centers on a 4.6-inch display, incorporates a 13-megapixel camera and is powered by the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon Pro (APQ8064) clocked at 1.5GHz.

This is not the first time that reports have surfaced of the Samsung Galaxy S4 failing to meet sales expectations, after it made an initially strong start on the back of pent up demand. The company's stock shed $12 billion on suggestions that Galaxy S4 sales were stalling in early June. The figures from NTT is the first hard data that supports this view.

Samsung is in good company though. NTT is the only one of Japan's three carriers not to sell Apple's iPhone either. However, it is thought that while the iPhone is yet to make an appearance on NTT's network, it is likely that it will some time in the future.
