Twitter tests out hashtag-based alerts for local live events

Testing discovered underway in iPhone app

Twitter is testing out location-based alerts of live events, according to reports. The feature has been discovered running in the social network's official iOS app, and appears to be associated with hashtags; in a given example, people using the tag "#TechShopggd" nearby might bring a post to the top of a feed, and offer the option to check out related tweets. Twitter has refused to comment other than to suggest that it's experimenting with a number of ideas.

The company has also recently been testing a Trending TV feature, in which links to popular TV shows appear as cards at the top of a timeline. Both efforts appear to stem from Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, who in June complained that Twitter was losing its town square feel and becoming cluttered with competing information. He mentioned the prospect of live events support at the time, but the company has otherwise kept quiet.
