TiVo launches Roamio DVR line with six-channel simultaneous recording

updated 07:28 am EDT, Tue August 20, 2013

Built-in Wi-Fi and out-of-home streaming makes an appearance in DVRs

TiVo has announced the latest in its digital video recorder range, with a number of upgrades and new features. The Roamio Series 5 family of DVRs are able to record from up to six HD cable channels simultaneously for a total of up to 450 hours, with some models introducing out-of-home streaming to the product line for the first time.

The Roamio offers four-channel and 75 hours of HD content recording, while the Roamio Plus increases to six channels and 150 hours, and the Roamio Pro provides both six channel recording and 450 hours on its 3 terabyte drive. All three are able to connect over Wi-Fi, use the new RF remote control, access to the usual roster of video and music apps, and improved system software in the form of "What To Watch Now." The Plus and Pro also include built-in TiVo Stream for local network streaming, a built-in MoCA bridge, and streaming to apps off the local network set to occur in the future. The basic Roamio adds the ability to record from a HD antenna rather than just cable.

The standard Roamio costs $200, with the Plus and Pro variant costing $400 and $600 respectively. Owners will either have to pay a monthly charge of $15 for the service, or can opt for a one-time product lifetime payment of $500, on top of the basic cost of the DVR itself.
