Sony Xperia Z1 name to symbolize 'One Sony' corporate strategy

The Sony Xperia flagship 'Honami' smartphone set for a pre-IFA debut on September 4 may be branded the Xperia Z1 according to a developer. The device, which has also previously been referred to as the Xperia i1, is expected to pick up the Z1 designation to reflect both that it is a substantial upgrade to the original Xperia Z and to reflect that it is the first smartphone from Sony to most fully realize Sony CEO Kaz Hirai's 'One Sony' strategy of integrating the various technological strengths of company into its shipping products where possible.

Leaked images of the device have so far revealed a design that looks very similar to the Xperia Z, and like the Xperia Z, centers on a 5-inch display. However, like the forthcoming iPhone 5S, which carries a very similar external design to the iPhone 5, is expected to pack completely revised internal specifications. The display on the Xperia Z1 is will incorporate Sony's Triluminos technology as well as the company's X-Reality and Bravia tech from its television division. Its camera is also expected to be at least 20-megapixels and use Sony's imaging division's Exmor RS sensor tech as well as incorporate a discrete Sony Bionz imaging processor for the first time.

Some of Sony's previous failings have been blamed on divisional rifts that saw the various company divisions fiercely guarding their own technology and IP and failing to collaborate on product development. For example, the company's first Android-based Walkman, while looking and functioning like a smartphone made by the former Sony-Ericsson division, was developed independently by the Walkman team with its own UI. The Xperia Z1 will, like some of Sony's more recent smartphones, will incorporate a Walkman app and other Walkman-like audio enhancements, as well as uniting entertainment offerings from its entertainment division.
