Google has reportedly met with the National Football League to talk about a possible Sunday Ticket deal, among other topics, unnamed sources have told AllThingsD. The report has ignited speculation that the search giant may be considering an attempt to secure exclusive rights to the NFL subscription package as part of a push for its Google TV or YouTube services.
NFL Sunday Ticket provides subscribers with access to all of the out-of-market games throughout the regular season. DirecTV currently retains an exclusive hold on the service, which starts at $45 per month and jumps to $60 per month if subscribers want to stream games from their computer or mobile device.
A separate report that surfaced last month suggests Google is involved in discussions with several media companies, allegedly to explore a potential web-based TV service focusing on live programming. The company has faced resistance from companies such as Viacom, which blocked its network websites from showing content via Google TV's browser.
The alleged meeting between Google executives and NFL representatives is said to have been a casual discussion rather than a serious step toward a formal agreement. A Google bid on Sunday Ticket is nonetheless viewed as a potentially serious move, as DirecTV is nearing the end of its four-year exclusive deal worth $4 billion.
