Lenovo prepares new ThinkPad lines for September, October release

updated 06:32 am EDT, Tue September 3, 2013

Hot-swappable batteries, touchscreens, Haswell processors touted

Lenovo has introduced five new to its ThinkPad T, X, and S series of notebooks. The S440, S540, T440, the previously-launched T440s, and X240, all being shown by the notebook producer at IFA in Berlin, bring slight changes and refreshes to existing lines, with the systems boasting up to 17 hours of battery life, hot-swappable batteries, and fourth-generation Intel Core processors.

The T440s adds Nvidia GeForce GT730M graphics options alongside the Haswell processor, and offers the same hinge, lid, and trackpad designs as its predecessor, the T431s. Up to 1 terabyte of storage can be used in the notebook, or alternatively an SSD, with Wi-Fi and an optional 4G connection also available to use. The T440 has a similar feature set, except that its touchscreen display is limited to a 14-inch 1600x900 version, while the T440s goes up to 1080p. The T440 will start from $900 while the T440s will start from $1,150 in October.

The X240, replacing the X230, brings a 12.5-inch Full HD display with optional touch, a backlit keyboard, and up to 1 terabyte of storage. Touting the ability to go "dongle free," the X240 offers an updated design with a drop hinge, weighs less than three pounds, and measures 20.3mm (0.8 inches) thick. Coming out in October, the X240 will start from $1,100.

The new S series items have beveled edges and an "ulta-thin bezel," a departure from the usual ThinkPad appearance which Lenovo says gives the impression of a "floating PC." The S440 and S540 both offer compatibility with Lenovo's OneLink connector and OneLink Dock for USB 3.0, native video, and Gigabit Ethernet. The S440 offers a 14-inch, 1,600x900 display, up to 8GB of RAM, and up to 500GB of storage, while the S540 opts for a 15-inch 1080p display, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, and a numpad. Lenovo will be offering the S440 and S540 in select markets initially, with the S440 coming out this month for 699 euro ($855) and the S540 in October from 649 euro ($920).
