HDMI moves to version 2.0, boost performance for Ultra HD TVs

The new HDMI 2.0 specification has been finalized, delivering a generational leap in performance with the same HDMI cables and connectors in use today. The current Category 2 cables can support the HDMI 1.4 specification at a 10.2Gbps have the capacity to support the new 18Gbps throughput of the new version 2.0 specification. The new standard has been necessitated by the arrival of Ultra HD TVs that demand higher bandwidths to support all of their potential capabilities.

The new HDMI 2.0 specification boosts the capacity of the standard to 2160p, which is four times the resolution of 1080p at 60fps. Cinema quality audio support now also extends to a massive 32 discrete channels. Further, in addition to supporting the current HDMI cables and connectors, the new standard is also fully backwards compatible allowing users to switch in and out 1080p and 2160p-capable devices.
