Apple at work on 'mystery' product with 17W power supply

Power consumption sits between 9.7-inch iPad, AirPort Extreme

Apple is at work on a new product that will require a unique 17W power supply, say AppleInsider sources. The people claim that Apple only recently started procuring parts for a 17W adapter, which they explicitly state isn't an upgrade to any of the company's current accessories. One source speculates that based on evidence, the gear will power a portable device that may launch within the next year.

The closest point of comparison may be the adapter for the fourth-generation iPad, which is rated at 12W. 17W would still fall below the 25W consumed by the AirPort Extreme, or the 45W needed for the MacBook Air. One possibility is that the adapter is for a rumored 13-inch iPad, although no other tangible evidence has supported the tablet's existence.

Some other rumored Apple products have included the iWatch and an unknown "television product." Just recently Apple received a shipment of 40 metric tons of set-tops. The latter is unlikely to be connected to the new adapter, though, since the current Apple TV uses an integrated power supply rated at just 6W. Even if a more power-hungry set-top was launched, the supply would likely remain integrated.
