Android 4.3 heading to Samsung Galaxy S 4, S III in October

updated 04:36 am EDT, Thu September 5, 2013

Software update to add support for Galaxy Gear smartwatch

Samsung will be bringing Android 4.3 to two more Galaxy devices later this year, after revealing its new Galaxy Note 3 will ship with the latest version of Jelly Bean. Both the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy S 4 will receive the mobile operating system update, which will be issued to carriers sometime in October, and will reach customer devices shortly afterward.

The Galaxy Note 3 will be shipping with Android 4.3 on-board due to the need for Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy support, in order for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch to function, reports Engadget. The update from Android 4.2 to 4.3 will specifically add Galaxy Gear functionality to the Galaxy S 4, though it is not clear if the Galaxy S III, which has yet to receive Android 4.2, will also support the smartwatch. The Galaxy S III could also receive a number of software features seen in the Galaxy S 4 as part of the update.

The update announcement comes shortly after Google announced that the next version of Android, version 4.4, will be called KitKat. While the name has been revealed, the new features of the software and the release schedule remains unknown.
