Ultra HD tablet shipping in November, optional pen input

Panasonic will be shipping a large Ultra HD-resolution Windows 8 tablet to Europe in the coming months, according to an IFA announcement. The Toughpad 4K tablet, initially shown at CES earlier this year, has a 20-inch IPS display with a resolution of 3840x2560, aimed at artists and architects rather than the usual Toughpad and Toughbook target audience.

Housed inside a fiberglass casing, the UT-MB5 will offer ten-point multi-touch and optional pen input from the Bluetooth-connected Anoto Live Pen, reports Engadget. The basic model, weighing in at 2.3kg (5 pounds), will offer an Intel Core i5 processor with either 4GB or 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, while the 2.7kg (6 pounds) Performance model will increase memory allocations to a maximum of 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Both models will provide three USB 3.0 ports, a HDMI-out connection, an SD card slot, and a desk cradle as an optional extra.

Panasonic will be shipping the standard model in November for 4,500 euro ($5,930), with the Anoto Live Pen selling for 280 euros ($370) at around the same time. The heavier Performance model is slated to come out early next year, at a price to be determined. It is not clear if the Toughpad 4K will be heading to the US and other regions, though the Microsoft blog believes it will be heading to the US, Canada, and Japan at launch.
