May foreshadow fall refresh
Apple's online store is no longer listing refurbished versions of the Apple TV, shoppers note. While Apple can periodically run out of refurbs, the timing may be more than coincidental. The company recently received 40 metric tons of "set top boxes" from a Chinese supplier, and a "television product" is rumored to be launching as soon as November.
Where Apple might be taking the Apple TV is unknown. While the device has gained a host of new apps in recent months, from sources like Vevo and ESPN, there isn't much room for the company to explore in terms of hardware. The unit already supports 1080p video and 5.1-channel surround sound; upgrading the processor and storage may not achieve many benefits, and it's too early for Apple to upgrade to 4K video. The company could however switch to 802.11ac Wi-Fi and HDMI 2.0.
