Mobile apps optimized for new console

Microsoft is currently previewing a SmartGlass app optimized for the Xbox One. It will carry the same basic features as the current version for the Xbox 360, however the next-generation console will support up to 16 SmartGlass devices with a significant reduction in latency. Gamers will also be able to take advantage of multiplayer matchmaking from their mobile device, or tap a Help button to get contextually aware assistance during a game.

SmartGlass for the Xbox 360 currently routes communications through Microsoft's remote servers, but the Xbox One interacts directly with the mobile device via local Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Gamers can also access more features from their mobile device when away from home, including achievements updates and Game DVR clips.

The mobile apps also provide full control for cable television or a set-top box, enabling users to change the channel or adjust volume from their smartphone or tablet. The Xbox One infrared blaster sends the control signals from the Kinect to the home theater equipment.

SmartGlass for Xbox One will be available as free downloads for iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8 devices after the console arrives on the market.
