Samsung continuing development efforts with Tizen OS

Samsung and Intel's jointly developed Tizen OS has been snapped running on the Galaxy S4. The photos show Tizen OS version 3, currently under development, running on Samsung current flagship Android device. Samsung had previously announced that it was planning to ship its first Tizen-based device early this year, but has since postponed it on two occasions, saying that it won't launch a device until late this year or early in 2014.

The Linux-based Tizen operating system is not thought to be part of a concerted devices and services strategy from Samsung in the short term, but rather an insurance policy now that Google has acquired Motorola. When you add Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's devices and services operations and Apple's highly successful fully integrated end-to-end software and hardware strategy, Samsung appears to be investing in the ongoing development of the operating system so that it too can adopt a similarly integrated strategy if and when it decides it is necessary.

As a joint-chair of the Tizen Association, Samsung recently injected $4 million into a Tizen App Challenge in an effort to encourage developers to jump on board the platform. Regardless, famed Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin expressed the view that Samsung may have permanently lost interest in continuing development on the platform given its overwhelming success with Google's Android platform. The latest photos suggest that even if Samsung does not release a Tizen OS-based device in the short to medium term, it continues to work with Intel on developing the operating system.
