Entry-level Xperia smartphone uses 5MP Exmor camera sensor, NFC

The Sony Xperia M smartphone has gone on sale in the United States, three months after the electronics producer revealed the mobile device, and weeks after it launched in Asia and Europe. The entry-level smartphone has appeared in both Sony's own online store and Newegg as an off-contract and unlocked release, priced at $250.

Using a 4-inch display with an 854x480-resolution, the Xperia M runs using a dual-core Snapdragon S4 clocked at 1GHz with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of expandable storage. On the back is a 5-megapixel camera with an Exmor sensor, while features typically seen in more pricey devices, such as NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, Sony's Stamina-mode battery saver and ClearAudio+, also make an appearance. Running on Android 4.1, it shares a number of design traits of its more-expensive stablemates, though it connects over HSPA+ 3G and is supplied with a 1,750mAh battery.

The Xperia Blog notes that it is being sold in a choice of black, white, yellow, and purple color options, though stock levels and color options vary between the retailers.
