Apple unveils iPhone 5C with multi-colored plastic backs

updated 01:46 pm EDT, Tue September 10, 2013

Prices to start at $99

Today Apple officially announced the iPhone 5C, a new mid-tier model. The device uses a seamless plastic back shell, available in green, yellow, blue, white, and pink colors. Apple is also touting a reinforced steel structure, along with a 4-inch Retina display, an 8-megapixel iSight camera, an A6 processor, and a FaceTime HD front camera. The phone supports LTE, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0.

A 16GB model will cost $99 on a two-year contract, while 32GB will be $199. Apple is also selling a line of custom, color-matching cases that will cost $29 each.

The specifications of the phone are roughly in line with the iPhone 5. The 5C, however, is replacing the 5 in Apple's lineup, though the 4S will remain. Had Apple continued to carry the 5, it would've likely shared the same $99 pricetag.

The 5C will ship to stores on September 20th, going up for pre-order on September 13th. US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and the UK will be the initial launch regions. China is notably a launch country for the first time, and in Japan, the device will be available through a third carrier, NTT DoCoMo. By December 2013, Apple is promising to expand availability to over 100 countries.
