Samsung preps Tizen-based TVs for 2014

Tizen to be used for appliances

Samsung is reportedly preparing to launch televisions that run Tizen, a Linux-based operating system that the company is co-developing with Intel. Speaking to German outlet Die Welt, Samsung's consumer electronics head, Boo-Keun Yoon, noted that Tizen will be used for upcoming smartphones, TVs and home appliances.

"This way we create an ecosystem in which we are able to connect all Samsung devices," the executive added.

The company has been working on Tizen for several years, originally under the LiMo project before Intel joined in the development efforts. Recent images show the OS running on a Galaxy S4, though Samsung has postponed a public device launch until the fourth quarter or early next year.

Tizen development has not been a primary focus for Samsung or Intel, but rather a side project that has been viewed as a protection against absolute reliance on Google's Android software. Samsung co-CEO JK Shin recently likened the project to a "simple alternative for Android."

In separate statement to CNET, a Samsung spokesman said the company is "considering providing a TV based on Tizen OS" but any potential launch would be "determined by market conditions."
