iPhone 5s orders to begin at 12:01AM Pacific on September 20

Retail stores opening early to accommodate rush

On September 20, iPhone 5s orders will begin at 12:01AM Pacific time at the Apple online store, the company has announced. People wanting to receive device the same day, however, will have to line up in front of a retail outlet. In the case of Apple, its own outlets will be opening early, at 8AM local time.

The absence of preorders for the 5s could cause a crush both at retail and online. Some analysts have speculated that Apple simply doesn't have enough units to meet demand, especially since China will be a first-tier launch country this time around. It's claimed that Apple may be having trouble producing the Touch ID sensor fundamental to the 5s design.

I haven't been able to figure out whether I can order at 12:01 for in store pickup. That'd be nice to do.

So is it worth me getting up at 2am CST to order, or is it basically guaranteed that the Apple Store's going to be down for hours and hours?

I've always had success ordering online from the cell providers' sites--att for the 4 and 4S, Verizon for the 5. I almost never try apple anymore at the start of online ordering time. If I don't hear either way, I'll probably open two tabs, one for apple in-store pickup and one for verizon at 12:01, then see if in store works for the 5s while doing everything but click 'order now' on verizon's site. If in store pickup is allowed, I'll do that. If not, I'll just wait on the verizon order to ship. :err: An update from Apple would be great.

I wouldn't normally go to an apple store--it's not close--but I'll be traveling on the 20th with plenty of time before my flight and an apple store near the airport.

Cool. I'm just afraid they'll sell out and I'll get stuck on a waiting list for a few weeks. The wife has been patiently waiting for months now, I don't want to make her wait longer :)
