Sprint preps One Up program to allow for yearly phone upgrades

updated 04:30 pm EDT, Sun September 15, 2013

One Up slated to launch on September 20

Sprint will finally join the other three major U.S. carriers in offering its own early upgrade program, which will start this weekend. Cnet reported on Sunday that the new program, dubbed Sprint One Up, will allow customers to pick up a mobile phone with no money down and to pay for the device over the course of two years. It is slated to kick off on September 20.

With Sprint One Up, a customer can pick up a $650 device and pay $27 per month for two years. If a customer leaves the service early, Sprint will require that they pay the remaining balance the following month.

Following the completion of one year of service, a customer can upgrade to a new phone by trading in their old device.

Signing up for Sprint One Up also nets customers a discount on unlimited talk, text, and data plans, with Sprint's unlimited plan available for as little as $65 per month. Existing customers who have been on contract for at least a year are eligible for Sprint One Up, though they must trade in their existing phones.

With Sprint One Up, the United States' third-largest wireless carrier has now joined in on a trend started by T-Mobile. That carrier introduced its own early upgrade program earlier this year, making significant waves in the wireless industry. Telecom giants AT&T and Verizon followed soon after with their own offerings. Sprint's program -- with its discount on unlimited service -- is much closer to T-Mobile's offering than it is to those of either of the other two carriers.
