Google rumored to launch Nexus 5, Android 4.4 on October 14

The highly-anticipated Google Nexus 5 has been tipped for an October 14 drop date, according to Ausdroid sources. Although not confirmed, the timing would align roughly with last year's launch timing and reveal of the Nexus 4, which debuted in October running Android 4.2 'Jelly Bean.' Despite the fact that Google has publicly erected its large chocolate covered Android 'KitKat' statue on its Mountain View campus, it has not yet revealed when the newly minted operating system will launch, or what features it will bring with it.

During the ceremony that marked the completion of Android 4.4 'KitKat,' Google's Nexus 5 was given an 'accidental' reveal with one of the company's staffers taking snaps of the new Android statue with a previously unseen Nexus device. That it was all-new was made easier to determine as it was pictured next to another staffer brandishing the older Nexus 4. Subsequently, an LG-manufactured smartphone that matched the appearance of the previously unseen Nexus device was spotted passing through FCC certification removing any doubt about what the device was, or that it will be released soon.

While the Nexus 5 will center on a 5-inch display and run a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core chipset, Android 4.4 is expected to some UI tweaks, including a change from the default blue tone to other colors and new notifications widgets. It is also expected to deliver a new Gallery visualisation and address some fragmentation issues including screen resizing and firmware support for older devices. Miracast updates are also mooted, as are new APIs for app animations.
