Android on Saturday, iOS on Sunday

The Android version of BlackBerry Messenger will go live on Saturday, September 21st, followed by an iOS release on Sunday, BlackBerry has confirmed. The launches may be timed to coincide with a rumored Friday event in Jakarta, Indonesia. Regardless, the apps will mark the first time BBM has expanded beyond BlackBerry devices.

Although BlackBerry has declined as a platform, BBM is still one of its most popular offerings. By extending BBM to other devices, the company may be hoping to achieve the popularity of other instant messaging services like WhatsApp, or at least increase the appeal of BlackBerry devices. BBM supports features such as group chat, emoticons, audio and video calls, voice notes, and file transfers.
