Google prepares mobile apps for offline YouTube viewing in November

Viewing stored YouTube video offline in app coming this year

Google will be allowing YouTube users to view video clips offline in the future. An update for the app, destined for both iOS and Android versions, will permit the storing of videos on a smartphone or tablet for a "short period" when there is no Internet connection available to use, with the update said to be coming through sometime in November.

The announcement on its YouTube Creators blog is a departure from the terms of service currently used by the service, which currently forbids the downloading of videos, though it did start allowing Android users to complete watching a cached clip in its app offline last year, so long as playback commenced while a connection was established.

While it is unclear how this feature will work, it will still have to contend with constraints such as being able to serve and track advertising, as well as possible copyright issues from users taking the downloaded video for more permanent storage. More details have been promised closer to launch.

How about they fix their lousy compression algorithm and work to increase bandwidth instead of passing off an attempt to reduce server load as a feature!

If their compression and content delivery is bad, what is better? YouTube is pretty magical.
