App turns smartphone, tablet into PS4 game controller

Sony plans to offer its own answer to Microsoft's SmartGlass interface for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, in the form of the PlayStation App. The announcement of the mobile and tablet app for iOS and Android at the company's Tokyo Games Show keynote accompanies more details about the PlayStation 4 and Sony's expected sales for the device.

The PlayStation App will turn a smartphone into a game controller, and act as a hub for PlayStation Network data including trophies and inter-player communications, reports Ars Technica. Dedicated game pages and friend activity lists were also shown at the keynote, with Twitter and Facebook integration to also be included.

The PlayStation 4 console itself, coming out on November 15th in the US and on November 29th in Europe, is hoped to be sold five million times before the end of the fiscal year, ending in March. The goal, considering its Japanese launch won't take place until February 22nd, is fairly ambitious. The PlayStation 3 took almost a year to hit that figure, with the Xbox 360 taking a similar time to reach the milestone.

Sony also demonstrated the Vita TV streaming from a PlayStation 4 to a second television, and that it would work using both the DualShock 3 and DualShock 4 game controllers. Transfers between the PlayStation 4 and the Vita TV took approximately ten seconds, though this will vary depending on home network speeds when it is released.
