RadioShack, Staples pulling Amazon Lockers from stores

Locker delivery from Amazon does not meet Staples criteria

Amazon Lockers are being pulled from Staples and RadioShack stores, after both brick-and-mortar retailers decided to pull out of the agreements. The removal of the units, which allows customers to ship deliveries to code-locked storage systems based in nearby stores rather than to their home or work, comes just under a year after they were installed.

Staples ended its deal with Amazon as it "didn't meet the criteria we set up together," said North American store and online president Demos Parneros to Bloomberg, but did not go into detail over the number of installed lockers, nor the reasons for the ended relationship. RadioShack spokeswoman Merianne Roth advised that it didn't "fit with its strategy."

Both store chains have been hampered in recent years by the rise of online shopping, with RadioShack suffering from declining sales for the past six quarters and a net loss of $200 million over the period, and revenue for Staples sliding for seven out of the last eight quarters. While the Amazon Lockers may have helped add to store sales by bringing occasional secondary purchases when customers collect their deliveries, it was evidently not enough to warrant their continued use.
