Twitter updates iOS, Android apps with 'recommended' tweets, accounts

updated 09:10 pm EDT, Tue September 24, 2013

Features user-adjustable settings, sends personalized recommendations

Following weeks of experimenting with the feature through a @MagicRecs account, Twitter is now incorporating optional personalized recommendations on significant tweets and other accounts that it thinks would be of interest to the user based on when multiple people the user is already following identify other users they follow, or "favorite" or re-tweet the same tweets. While retaining the @MagicRecs account, the social service is rolling out the feature to its iOS and Android apps to incorporate the feature through use of opt-in push notifications.

The @MagicRecs account, when followed, sent recommendations through direct messages. The new feature on the mobile apps allows users to adjust settings to fit their needs at any time, and turn the notifications on or off with the "Recommendations" toggle in the notification settings. The feature was designed to help users find new accounts to follow that would be of interest to them, or to avoid missing any widely-quoted tweets.

The feature isn't intended for advertising purposes, and is customized to each user based on their demonstrated interests and tasted (derived from who or what they follow, retweet and recommend). The company has not said if the feature will eventually replace the "Suggested Users to Follow" list, but the recommendations are seen as a way to help keep users engaged and discovering new content.
