Google updates Gmail for Android, brings hashtags to web search

Social networking integration improved

Google has released an update to its Gmail app for Android, alongside a revamped web search with new social-networking features. The Gmail app (free Play Store) brings a new interface that is intended to have a cleaner design when in conversation view and while checkmarking multiple messages, while the app now clearly shows when account sync is off.

The company has also improved hashtag support for its basic search experience, as noted in a Google+ post that was spotted by Engadget. When users enter a hashtag search, a Google+ sidebar presents relevant results from Google's own social network.

Users can click on links to search the hashtag on other social sites, however the sidebar lacks support for results from competing services such as Facebook and Twitter.

The Gmail update is already available from the Play Store, while the hashtag search is initially limited to users in the US and Canada.
