Search giant celebrates 15 years in business

Google has introduced an updated search experience for mobile devices, along with several new features for its Knowledge Graph tool. An upcoming update to the company's iOS app will provide notifications across any devices, regardless of platform, enabling users to add a reminder from an iPad and then receive the alert later in the day on their Android smartphone.

The mobile interface has also been refined, with a simpler layout that aims to bring a unified approach between various mobile platforms. The update brings additional touch optimizations, with results clustered on cards to help users focus on the proper answers.

The Knowledge Graph tool continues to be expanded with new content related to a wider range of questions. Users can now apply filters to broad results, such as Impressionist artists, or view side-by-side comparisons between different things such as foods, dog breeds and celestial objects, among others.

The updates are being highlighted as part of Google's 15-year celebration since the company first launched its search engine in 1998.

"Remember what it was like to search in 1998?" Google SVP of search, Amit Singhal, reflects in a blog post. "You'd sit down and boot up your bulky computer, dial up on your squawky modem, type in some keywords, and get 10 blue links to websites that had those words. It seemed like magic (and it was way way faster than card catalogs and microfiche!)."
