Motorola expanding presence in Waterloo, Ontario, hiring planned

Waterloo expansion could take advantage of BlackBerry layoffs

Motorola will be opening a new office in Waterloo, Ontario, the effective home of competitor BlackBerry. The new engineering hub will be expanding on the existing Google Kitchener-Waterloo office occupied by approximately 200 staff, and will apparently be just a ten-minute drive from the doors of BlackBerry's main headquarters.

Motorola plans to take advantage of the engineering talent in the region, reports the Financial Post, with Motorola Canada engineering director Derek Phillips claiming "We've got big plans and we're very optimistic." Phillips continued "We're always looking for places where there's lots of opportunity for growth and it's not always easy to find places that have significant tech talent in a variety of areas, but especially mobile."

The current staff at Motorola Kitchener-Waterloo, consisting of a "handful of employees," will soon be bolstered by a hefty amount of hiring, with the timing of the expansion coming shortly after BlackBerry confirmed it would be letting go of 4,500 employees. Though it was not revealed what offices would receive reductions in staff, it is likely that the new Motorola office will be able to take advantage of the widened pool of potential employees. Depending on what happens with the Fairfax Financial Holdings purchase agreement with BlackBerry, there could end up being even more people with mobile industry experience up for grabs in the future.
