Asha 502, 2013 edition shows up in pics

Images of a new entry-level touchscreen smartphone from Nokia leaked to the Internet this weekend, with @evleaks tweeting a shot of the Asha 502 in a range of colors. The 502 will likely see an official unveiling in October at a Nokia event in Abu Dhabi, but the pre-release images show a device that takes design cues from Nokia's Windows Phone-powered line of Lumia devices. No information is yet available on pricing for the Asha 502, but it may hit a point similar to the Asha 501, which sells for $99.

The images show off a device available in six colors: black, blue, green, white, red, and yellow. It also features a redesigned rear speaker, an LED flash next to the rear camera, and apparently a clear plastic casing surrounding the colored interior plastic.

Details on the device's specifications are scant, but some sources say it will have dual-SIM capabilities and Wi-Fi connectivity. The Asha 501, released earlier this year, is typical of the Asha line of low-end devices, with a three-inch 320x240 display, 3.2MP camera, and 4GB memory card for storage. The 502 may be somewhere in the neighborhood of these specifications.

When the device does see release, it will likely have Facebook and Twitter preinstalled. It may also have access to the Nokia Store, as well as the ability to run ported S40 apps.

The Asha line has remained one of the few bright spots for Nokia, as few other competitors are able to match its prowess in the low-end smartphone market. While sales declined sequentially last quarter, Nokia still moved 4.3 million Asha units in the quarter. The devices tend to sell well in emerging markets such as Pakistan, Thailand, India, and China, where the average consumer is unable to afford a higher-end phone.
