Scribd launches e-book subscription service with HarperCollins, others

updated 04:33 pm EDT, Tue October 1, 2013

New program allows up to 10 books to be downloaded for offline reading

Document storage service Scribd has launched a new ebook "all you can read" subscription service. For $9 per month, users have access to nearly the entire HarperCollins US collection of e-books, with sales available on all the rental titles. The cross-platform Scribd app on iOS and Android provides the gateway to the books and free Scribd-hosted content, with the user being able to download up to 10 books for offline reading.

The service also contains works with 30 smaller publishers to provide content, which includes "thousands" of best sellers, the site says. Smaller publishers include E-Reads, Kensington, RosettaBooks, Sourcebooks, and Workman. Individual authors have the ability to "opt-out" of the service, preventing their titles from being available to readers.

HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray said in a statement that the new offering will give HarperCollins authors "benefit from extended reach, increased discovery, and improved royalty streams." Despite the introduction of the subscription service, Scribd will retain its original mandate, the distribution and viewing of free documents.
