Rdio introduces free music streaming service in US, Canada, Australia

updated 05:17 am EDT, Thu October 3, 2013

Ad-free service on mobile apps, advertising on Rdio web player

Internet radio service Rdio has launched its free music service in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Stemming from a deal with radio station operator Cumulus Media last month, the service will now offer a subscription-free way to listen to music, as it tries to wean users away from competitors such as Spotify and Pandora.

For the moment, mobile app versions of the service for iOS and Android will not feature advertising between tracks, though Cumulus Media is currently managing ads in the web version of the radio player, reports the Associated Press. The $10 monthly account option will still be available to buy, providing users the ability to select individual songs, albums, genres, or artists, while free users will be have to put up with a randomized playlist.

Other parts of the deal said to come in the future includes playlist generation from Cumulus radio stations, and the addition of non-musical content such as talk shows.
