Event may show new version of Nike FuelBand monitoring device

Nike has sent out invitations to the media for an October 15 event in New York City, where it plans to discuss the future of its digital world experience. Likely, but not confirmed, at the event is a new iteration of the FuelBand monitoring device, which is nearly two years old.

The information from the current FuelBand wristband is integrated into the Nike+ online community and phone application, allowing wearers to set fitness goals, monitor progression, and compare themselves to others part of the community. Nike+ relies on the gamification of fitness activities turning all tracked movement into NikeFuel points, which can unlock achievements, can be shared with friends, or can be used to engage others in competition.

Nike has not explicitly said that it will reveal a new FuelBand or even update the software. It may instead opt to discuss what it plans on doing with the iPhone 5s M7 motion sensing chip.

The absolute addiction so many people have to their phones depresses me. In big cities people (mostly women) are seen walking around always with one hand holding their phone, at a restaurant phones are on the table at all time unless being used and no conversation is important enough to be interrupted by a tweet, text or phone call. With what looks likes the next step in the de-evolution of our social skill set bio-gear is promising to make us obsessed with even more non crucial information. I predict many people will be checking their heart rates and other non vital bio metrics on a 15 minute cycle feeding their addiction to the self and further removing them from the world around them.

A phone and all the biometric gear are simply tools that can be used for good or evil. I agree with you Kerry that a lot of people would sooner talk to you via txt than right in front of you, but that's their nature and the phone only reveals it.

I would think the biometric stuff would not be as big of a deal. Maybe at first, you know how it is when you first get a gadget. Reminds me of my first Hybird car and the displays that I used to check frequently to make sure I wasn't killing my milage.

Anyway, like any other tool all this stuff can reveal one's true nature. We are social creatures after all.
