New device allegedly to run apps, stream from multiple sources
Amazon is reportedly in the process of designing a set-top box, similar in form and function to an Apple TV or Roku media streamer, to be released before the holiday buying season. Divergent from Apple, Amazon is allegedly offering an app ecosystem for the device, allowing gaming or media streaming from sources other than just Amazon purchases.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the pricing for the device is unknown, but the company typically offers devices at near- or below-cost to drive media sales. An Amazon Prime subscription requirement for streaming is likely, as the company's current streaming offering allows media playback to compatible devices with the $80 per year service.
