updated 11:29 pm EDT, Thu October 3, 2013

Reasoning for departure and destination company not known

Chief Product Officer for Samsung Mobile Kevin Packingham has departed the company. Samsung mobile issued a terse statement regarding the departure, saying that "Kevin Packingham has departed Samsung Mobile. We thank Kevin for his contributions and wish him well in his future endeavors." No specific information regarding the reasons for the split have been made public, and the statement doesn't make clear if Packingham resigned or was fired.

Packingham spent two years at Samsung Mobile in Dallas Texas, and was a key player in the global release of the Galaxy S III smartphone. In September, when he was asked about the approach to the release and Samsung doing the "heavy lifting" for the marketing of the device rather than the carriers, he claimed that "the change that happened was it took a lot of burden off the carriers. People were coming into their stores and they didn't have to pay for that demand."

Packingham had some involvement, although specifics aren't known, in the "stage show" approach to the Galaxy S 4 phone reveal. Also, he helped launch the Galaxy Gear smart watch.
