iPhone 5s leads September smartphone sales at US carriers

updated 01:08 pm EDT, Fri October 4, 2013

5c close behind in some cases

The iPhone 5s was the top-selling smartphone at all four major US carriers during the month of September, according to data from Canaccord Genuity. The iPhone 5c, moreover, came in second place at AT&T and Sprint, taking third at Verizon and T-Mobile. Filling in the top three at each carrier was the Samsung Galaxy S4.

In August, the iPhone 5 held the lead at AT&T, but placed second at competing carriers, where the Galaxy S4 was on top. Other high-ranking phones that month included the Nokia Lumia 1020, the HTC One, the Motorola Droid MAXX, and the Sony Xperia Z. The top three vendors during the month were Samsung, Apple, and HTC.

Canaccord argues that Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, debuting this month, "should compete very well" against the iPhone. By contrast, the firm suggests that HTC, BlackBerry, and Motorola have given up high-end smartphone share to Apple. Droid sales are said to have declined after the latest iPhones arrived, while HTC saw "very weak" demand for the One. BlackBerry achieved only "very soft" sales of the new Z10 and Q10.

It's good to see US consumers smartening up and picking what are arguably the three best phones out there.

While Android is not for me personally for a variety of reasons, I think its safe to say the S4 is among the best Android phones available (in a sea of crap) and so I'm pleased that consumers who opt not to buy an iPhone for whatever reason are picking something decent (though I have to admit I wish the Nokia Windows phones were doing better -- they are also decent alternative options). Competition is good.
